Allowed in a general waste skip bin
These items can go straight into a general waste skip bin.
- Mixed building wasteBricks, concrete (dry), tiles, gyprock, plasterboard, metal, rubble, soil, sand, rocks and stones.
- FurnitureHousehold furniture, bed bases, old couches, lounges, tables and more.
- Green wasteSmall tree logs (less than 50cm thick), grass clippings, shrub/yard clippings and timber waste.
- Household appliancesWhite goods and kitchen goods.
- Insulation (new)New insulation materials that can be recovered and re-used.
- PlasticsPVC piping and other plastics that can be recycled.
- Fibre cement sheetingBlueboard, Villaboard and compressed cement sheeting.
- Fabrics and clothingIncluding shoes and sneakers.
- Sawdust (bagged)Bagged sawdust that can be recovered and re-used.

Prohibited items
The following items are restricted and can’t go in a general waste skip bin.
- AsbestosAsbestos and asbestos containing materials cannot be recovered.
- BatteriesCar, lithium, electric tool and toy batteries.
- Chemical wasteHazardous or free-flowing liquids such as cleaning agents, paints, oils and pesticides.
- Liquid wasteEmpty paint tins and spray cans.
- Food & liquidsFood packaging, liquid foods and takeaway containers.
- Gas bottlesCannot be recovered.
- Fire extinguishersCannot be recovered.
- Oil heatersCannot be properly recovered.
- Medical wasteNeedles, syringes, soiled dressings, diagnostic samples, blood, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and radioactive materials.
- Silica dustBrick, cement, concrete, drywall, grout or tiles with silica.
- Vinyl flooringCannot be properly recovered.
- Foam and polystyreneCannot be properly recovered.
- ResinCannot be properly recovered.
- Old insulationCannot be properly recovered.
- Synthetic grass and astroturfAstroturf, softfall, rubber, rubber flooring and vinyls.
Remember not to overload your skip
- Don’t fill your bin above the rim — overloaded bins can’t be transported safely or legally.
- Evenly distribute the weight of your waste — load heavy items on the bottom and lighter items on top.
- Make sure you have the right bin for the right type of waste.
